SLAIN AL-QAEDA LEADER IN IRAQ

5 May 07. US Major General William Caldwell has told reporters that the slain al-Qaida leader killed in Iraq was MUHARIB ABDUL LATIF AL-JUBURI and not the al-Qaida chief, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, as the Iraqi Interior ministry had earlier claimed.

Al-Qaida confirmed the US version in an internet posting.

Abdul Latif, a senior al-Qaida figure, has been killed along with three comrades in an “enemy” air strike after attempts for more than eight hours to capture the men in a raid on a house.

EARLIER REPORT: 1 May 2007.

The interior ministry in Iraq says it has received intelligence that Abu Ayyub al-Masri,  the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq has been killed.

Al-Masri, believed to be an Egyptian, has led the group since June 2006 when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a US air strike. According to Iraqi officials, al-Masri was killed in an "internal battle" between militants.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq is blamed for or has claimed some of the bloodiest insurgent attacks in Iraq since 2003.
