US Major General William Caldwell has told reporters that the slain al-Qaida
leader killed in Iraq was MUHARIB ABDUL
LATIF AL-JUBURI and not the al-Qaida chief,
Abu Ayyub al-Masri, as the
Iraqi Interior ministry had earlier claimed.
Al-Qaida confirmed the US version in
an internet posting.
Abdul Latif, a senior al-Qaida figure,
has been killed along with three comrades in an “enemy” air strike after
attempts for more than eight hours to capture the men in a raid on a
1 May 2007.
The interior ministry in Iraq says it has received intelligence
that Abu Ayyub al-Masri, the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq has been killed.
Al-Masri, believed to be an Egyptian, has led the group since June
2006 when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a US air strike. According
to Iraqi officials, al-Masri was killed in an "internal battle" between
Al-Qaeda in Iraq is blamed for or has claimed some of the bloodiest
insurgent attacks in Iraq since 2003.
